Founded by a Cranford teen with a passion for sports and giving back.
What started as a love of sports and working with younger kids has turned into a growing business for Cranford teen Cody DeCoons.
In March, 2026 at just 14 years old, DeCoons, a student at Hillside Avenue School, was selected as the recipient of the annual Haughey Brothers Young Entrepreneur Grant, receiving $2,500 to help launch his business, Sports Sitters.
Sports Sitters connects local middle and high school athletes with younger children for one-on-one sessions, small group training, School's Out Camps, birthday parties, sports tryout preparation, community clinics, special events and Multi-Sports Summer Camps for children age 6+.
The goal is to help kids improve their skills, stay active, learn from positive role models in their own community and have fun. We bring the coaching to you! Our Sitters arrive at your home or local park fully equipped to lead warm-ups, skill-focused instruction, and exciting games tailored to your child's age and ability.
Born and raised in Manhattan, Cody moved to Cranford in 2023 before starting sixth grade. While he had played soccer growing up, he was new to most organized sports. Wanting to catch up, he began training with local high school athletes who helped prepare him for tryouts and introduced him to the confidence, discipline, and teamwork that sports can build.
Those mentors had a lasting impact on Cody. They became role models, friends, and coaches — inspiring the idea behind Sports Sitters. His vision was simple: give younger kids the same opportunity to learn from local student-athletes while creating meaningful leadership and job opportunities for the next generation.
Cody's vision for Sports Sitters has been recognized at both local and national levels.
Cody was awarded the Haughey Brothers Young Entrepreneur Grant in March 2026 to fund the launch of Sports Sitters NJ.
Named a finalist for the Entrepreneur of Impact Award — a prestigious national competition recognizing young entrepreneurs making a difference in their communities.
Selected for the Hillside Avenue School Peer Leader Team, and served as an assistant flag football coach intern with i9 Sports for kids ages 6+.
Awarded Middle School Student of the Year by Elks Club #2600, recognizing Cody's academic achievement, community involvement, and leadership.
